ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY OBJECTIVES

THE MISSION of the Assistive Technology Program (AT) at University Legal Services ("ULS") is to make efforts that result in laws, regulations, policies, practices, procedures, or organizational structures that promote consumer-responsive programs or entities; and facilitate and increase access to, provision of, and funding for, assistive technology devices and assistive technology services, in order to empower individuals with disabilities to achieve greater independence, productivity, and integration and inclusion within the community and workforce.

Assistive Technology may significantly improve the quality of life of individuals with disabilties. For adults, they may make the difference between being able to live independently in the community and requiring care in an institution. For children, they may make the difference between succeeding and failing in school. Despite these crucial advantages, the issue of how and by whom such devices are paid for can result in delay or denial of AT services. Possible funding sources to consider include Medicaid or Medicare; private health insurance; and the school district.
