The “Help America Vote Act” of 2002 ensures that people
with disabilities will be able to fully participate in the electoral process.
HAVA requires each state and the District of Columbia to upgrade their
voting equipment so they are accessible to people with disabilities, ensure
that polling places are fully accessible, and train election officials and
poll workers on how to promote access and participation by people with disabilities.
Individuals who might qualify for PAVA services include,
but are not limited to, the following:
· Persons with physical disabilities, including visual impairments
· Persons with developmental disabilities
·
Persons with mental illness
The PAVA program provides the following services:
· Ensures that people with disabilities have the opportunity to fully participate in the electoral process
· Informs people with disabilities of their voting rights and provides them with accessible voter information
· Monitors polling places and voting equipment to ensure accessibility
· Assists people with disabilities in registering to vote
